MSNBC Teams With SCORE87 to Help Local Business ” Kale Cafe”

In mid-March two local entrepreneurs, Omar and Camille Brown took a big step. The wrote to Frank Silverstein, the producer for MSNBC’s “Your Business Makeover” show asking that their business Kale Café be accepted as part of their show and be made over. At that time Kale Café, which started as the Brown’s dream four years ago, had two locations. One was located in Daytona Beach (Beach Street) and the another in Ormond Beach (Granada Avenue). They are considering opening a third location and realized that this the perfect time for a “makeover” to optimize their business processes and improve financial management, raw materials sourcing and menu management. Silverstein agreed and the journey began.

The makeover involved bringing in two experts; Chris Meyer, a financial analyst and Dean Max, a chef and owner of restaurants. They reviewed Kale Café’s business processes and made a number of recommendations outlined in the video below. Once the makeover is completed the MSNBC experts move on. In order to provide continuing support to the Browns, MSNBC asked the Volusia/Flagler Chapter of SCORE to provide follow-up support to maximize the potential for success. Dave Singleton, the Chapter’s resident restaurant expert stepped in and began a mentoring process with the Browns. They have also taken advantage of the Chapter’s ongoing Workshop program. Omar Brown attended a recent workshop and was recognized. Many of the attendees stayed after the workshop to ask Omar questions about the Kale Café journey which is described in the video.

The more I learned about them, I realized they could calm some fears we had in business about making decisions and answer a lot of questions. As a business owner, SCORE gives you the extra support and confidence you need to prevail and make the necessary changes that businesses have to do.
